[Class 83 (iii).] Nut blanks are carried by chucks arranged in rows in a table, the latter being fed forward after each operation to present a fresh row to the axially movable and rotatable taps. A cylinder M, with holes P for the passage of waste, carries rows of nut-holding chucks N, Fig. 5, and is intermittently rotated to present each row in turn to a corresponding row of taps by a rotating disc F carrying a pin H engaging radial slots in a disc K on the axle of the cylinder, the latter being located by a cam-operated spring-pressed dowel S engaging holes in the disc K. The curved-shank taps are carried in spindles m driven from a shaft B through bevel gearing f, g and spur gearing j, k. A bevel wheel d on the shaft B drives, through gearing, fast and slow wheels W and X respectively either of which may be automatically clutched to a shaft C in order to give the machine increased speed during the rotation of the cylinder. The taps are raised by a bar p, cam-operated from the shaft C, engaging collars on the spindles. Safety-levers 9, Fig. 5, slotted for the passage of the taps swing aside as the spindles are raised and prevent the lowering of the tap if a nut is still retained on the threaded portion. The cylinder may be replaced by a disc with radially disposed chucks, or a rectangular table traversed across the machine.
