Abstract

342,648. Coating metals. DICKER, S. G. S., 20, Holborn, London.-(Naamlooze Vennootschap Philips' Gloeilampenfabrieken; 6, Emmasingel, Eindhoven, Holland.] Sept. 26, 1929, No. 29212. [Class 82 (ii).] Tungsten is deposited on a molybdenum wire by heating the wire to 1700‹ C. for some minutes in tungsten hexachloride vapour. The wire may then be drawn by hammering or by dies. The molybdenum is then dissolved out without affecting the tungsten by a mixture of 10 volumes nitric acid (s.g. 1.41), 6 volumes sulphuric acid (s.g. 1À84) and 4 volumes water. The wires to be coated are preferably arranged in the form of a cylindrical cage closed by plates at both ends as shown in Fig. 3 or alternatively in the form of a helix. The thickness of the deposit diminishes to zero towards the inside of the cylinder or helix so as to exhibit a slot as shown in section in Fig. 5; this facilitates solution of the core. Solution may alternatively be facilitated by the use of a hollow core. Tubes of very small thickness e.g. 500 micron or even 20 micron may be made by the process. The specific gravity of the deposited tungsten is stated to be over 19À0. According to the Provisional Specification, the invention is also applicable to the manufacture of tubes of refractory metals other than tungsten, and cores of material other than molybdenum may be employed.
