Abstract
342,574. Discharge lamps. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO., Ltd., Magnet House, Kingsway, London, RYDE, J. W., and HARRIS, N. L., of General Electric Co., Wembley, Middlesex. March 11, 1930, No. 7920. [Class 39 (i).] In electric discharge lamps for sound recording and other purposes, of the type wherein a positive-column discharge passes through a narrow tube connecting two vessels of larger diameter which contain the anode and cathode, respectively disposed so that there is unobstructed vision along the tube from at least one end of the lamp, the discharge is supported by thermionic emission from the cathode. The example shows a thermionic cathode 1 comprising a helically coiled filament, which may have an oxide coating, supported at right-angles to the axis of the bulb 6 by wires 2, 3 and 7, with a stiffening-support provided by two short wires 9 fused into a glass bead 8. The enc. of the bulb 6 farthest from the pinch 5 is formed into a narrow tube 10 enclosed by a hard glass bulb 11 containing a wire anode 12 sealed through the wall of the bulb 11. The tube may be filled with a mixture of neon and mercury vapour.
