342,246. Compression resistances. BRITISH THOMSON-HOUSTON CO., Ltd., Crown House, Aldwych, London.-(Assignees of Woodcock, V. E. ; 713, The Argonne, Washington, U.S.A.) July 28, 1930, No. 22691. Convention date, July 27, 1929. [Class 37.] In a compressible pile resistance, in order to vary the change of resistance in a predetermined manner for uniform advance of the actuators 5, 6, Fig. 1, elastic bags 11 which may be made of rubber are inflated, enclosed and placed (enclosed in inelastic containers 9) between the resistance piles 1 and the actuating means 5, 6. The inelastic containers are formed by a metal plate 3, which transmits the pressure to the compressible carbon piles and also connects them together, and rigid cylindrical or other shaped members 9 attached to said plate 3. Springs 2 press the plate 3 away from the piles 1. The rate at which the resistance of the piles is varied depends upon the resistance characteristic of the piles with respect to applied pressure, the nature and initial pressure of the gas in the inflated bags 11, the shape of the inelastic containers 9 and the rate of advance of the actuator 5. In a modification, Fig. 3, as applied to a single pile rheostat the gas bag is held within a concave actuator 10 the edges of which contact with the plate 3 when the inherent resistance characteristic of the pile has been passed, thrust being thereafter transmitted positively.
