Abstract
Cellulosic material from plants of annual growth, such as cornstalks, is digested with alkali and the residual liquor is dried and destructively distilled at a temperature not above 300 DEG C., the remaining porous carbon serving as a source of active carbon. The residual liquor is preferably acidified before evaporation to precipitate water insoluble pentosans. The liquid is then spray dried and distilled to yield a fuel gas and organic compounds. Specification 13409/91, [Class 2, Acids and salts, Organic &c.], is referred to.ALSO:Cellulosic material from plants of annual growth, such as cornstalks, is digested at low pressure with an alkali, and the residual liquor is dried and destructively distilled at a temperature not above 300 DEG C. The residual liquor is acidified with sulphuric acid before evaporation usually to a hydrogen ion concentration of pH 4,4 to precipitate water insoluble pentosans, which are filtered off. The liquid is then spray dried and the residue distilled. The condensed vapours yield organic acids, hydrocarbons, phenolic bodies, furfural or furfuramide. The fixed gases containing carbon monoxide, methane, hydrogen and sometimes ammonia and amines serve as fuel gas. The remaining porous carbon is used as a source of active carbon. Specification 13409/91, [Class 2, Acids and salts, Organic &c.], is referred to.
