Abstract
<PICT:0341560/III/1> Liquid or pasty carbonaceous materials such as tars, tar oils, mineral oils, and the like, prior to treatment with hydrogen in the presence of catalysts, are heated in a vessel a, preferably under pressure, in the presence of chemically inactive filling material such as pumice, coke, Raschig rings, clay or porcelain bodies to such a degree that the ash content of the carbonaceous material is deposited on the said filling material, and a substantially ash-free material is conducted to the reaction vessel proper b. Preferably, hydrogen or any hydrogenating gas referred to in Specification 313,505, [Class 32, Distilling &c.], is introduced by a pipe d; the ash, mixed with the asphaltic constituents of the raw material, is drawn off by a pipe e. If the content of asphalt is too small to cause the ash to flow, asphaltic substances may be added. The temperature of the purified material passing into the vessel b may be adjusted by use of a cooler or heater, or by addition of hot or cold hydrogen, or cold oil. The material may be stirred during purification.
