Abstract

341,440. Detecting and preventing leakage at pipe joints. WAGNER, F., Mettmann, Rhineland, Germany. Oct. 7, 1929, No. 30348. [Classes 99 (i) and 99 (ii).] A sleeve 7 surrounds a joint, such as a welded joint 5, and at its ends is closed by packing g rings 8 retained by a lead filling 9, a space 24 between the pipes and the sleeve being connected by a vent pipe 25 with a road grating 28 having a bedding flange 39. The vent pipe is fitted with a perforated cap 29. A gas leakage detecting instrument may be provided. The pipe may be bedded in gravel so that gas leaking from parts other than the protected joint collects under a cowl 31 and passes upwards through the pipe 25 or a separate vent. The sleeve 7 may be divided by a longitudinal joint and the packing 8 may be retained by collars on the pipes held together by bolts.
