740,427. Flexible pipe couplings. ENGLISH ELECTRIC CO., Ltd. Sept. 17, 1954 [Sept. 18, 1953], No. 25835/53. Class 99(1). End flanges 3<SP>1</SP>, 4<SP>1</SP> of pipes 1, 2 mount flanges 211, 221 bonded to an interconnecting natural or synthetic rubber sleeve 201 relieved from hoop stresses due to internal fluid pressure by encircling metal wire 23<SP>1</SP> and relieved from axial stresses by a central tie rod 11<SP>1</SP>co-acting with seatings 91 fixed to each tube as by spiders 51. Spherical seatings 9<SP>1</SP> co-act with like seatings on end nuts 12<SP>1</SP> of the rod 11<SP>1</SP>, lids 261 and a rubber sleeve 27<SP>1</SP> supported by rings 28<SP>1</SP> forming a closed chamber filled with oil. A screen 25<SP>1</SP> protects the sleeve 20<SP>1</SP> from the main body of a flowing medium carried. The wire 23<SP>1</SP> may be bonded on or into the sleeve 20<SP>1</SP> and be of circular or U-shaped section and may be formed as individual spaced or contiguous hoops or a continuous spiral attached at its ends to the flanges 21<SP>1</SP>, 22<SP>1</SP>. In a modification, coned seatings 9<SP>1</SP>, 12<SP>1</SP> exposed on the end of spider extension tubes are provided, joint flexibility being allowed by using as a tie rod a long flat strip. In one form, one pipe flange mounts externally a protective sleeve reaching nearly to the other flange.
