Abstract

341,086. Turbidometers. KIDDE & CO., Inc., W., 140, Cedar Street, New York, U.S.A.-(Assignees of Freygang, G. G. ; Weehawken, New Jersey, U.S.A.). Oct. 10, 1929, No. 30761. Convention date, Oct. 30, 1928. [Class 97 (iii).] In the system for the detection of foreign matter in fluids, for example, smoke in air, in which light is reflected and/or refracted on to a light-sensitive cell by the foreign matter when present in a stream of the fluid, the cell is permanently exposed to a small beam of light, so that a small supervisory current flows in the alarm circuit, which includes a no-load relay. As shown, smoke present in a stream of air passing across a light beam c<1> will illuminate the photo-electric cell e to cause an alarm to be given. A mirror g is associated with the light source c so that a small beam c<5> permanently illuminates the cell e. In a modification, a separate light source directs the beam upon the cell. The cell is in circuit with a battery i, no-load relay l, overload relay l<1>, and thermionic amplifier j. The constant light beam c<5> causes a supervisory current to flow in the circuit insufficient to operate the relay l<1> and sufficient to prevent operation of the relay l. Smoke in the light beam c<1> increases the current, operating the relay l<1> and an alarm m<1>. Failure of the apparatus from any cause interrupts the supervisory current, causing operation of the no-load relay l and an alarm m.
