Abstract
804,541. Light-sensitive mist detectors. GRAVINER MANUFACTURING CO. Ltd. Oct. 31, 1955 [Nov. 5, 1954], No. 32037/54. Class 40 (3). An arrangement for detecting excessive concentrations of oil mists in engine crank-cases (e.g. due to overheated bearings &c.) comprises a hollow louvred probe 10 adapted to be inserted into the crank-case and inside which is positioned a photo-electric cell 14 secured to and spaced a predetermined distance from (by means of hollow rods 20) a unitary structure including an electric lamp 13 the structure being arranged to be clamped between a flange 11, attached to the probe and secured to the outside of the crankcase, and a housing 12 the hinged portion 12a of which is secured, in the closed position by means of wing nuts 18. To prevent oil mist from entering the lamp housing 12 and the photo-electric cell housing 17 both housings are sealed by means of translucent windows 15 and 17b respectively. In an alternative construction the positions of the photo-electric cell and light source may be interchanged (Fig. 4, not shown) and in each arrangement supply leads to the element which is positioned inside the probe are brought out through one of the hollow rods 20 to a plug 31 to which the supply leads to the lamp are also connected and which connects with an external control and warning circuit arrangement via a plug and socket 31, 32. The latter circuit arrangement (Fig. 3, not shown) includes an indicating meter and a moving-coil relay, connected in series, and operated directly by the signal generated by the photo-electric cell. The meter is calibrated in terms of the obscuration of the photo-electric cell which is produced by the oil mist present in the probe (and therefore in the crank-case) and the relay is connected in a warning and indicating circuit arrangement which gives a visible indication of normal operation, with the concentration of oil mist at a safe level, and both a visible indication and audible warning when the oil mist concentration exceeds a predetermined level.
