Abstract
340,873. Controlling aircraft. HUGHES, J. A., Milford House, Milford Lane, Strand, London. March 8, 1930, No. 7682. [Class 4.] In aircraft of the type controlled by means of the reactionary effect of air under pressure being discharged into the atmosphere, conduits terminating at the rear in rectangular chambers are provided for collecting and retaining the air under pressure obtained by the passage of the aircraft through the atmosphere when in flight. In an application to an aeroplane, Fig. 3, conduits 1, 6, respectively, are provided in the fuselage and wings and have open ends 5, 7 to admit the air. Shutters 23, Fig. 8, operated by the pilot through cable mechanism have slots co-operating with slots in the walls 2 of a rectangular air storage space 3 so that air may be emitted upwardly, downwardly, or to either side. Similar arrangements are employed for the wings ; in the case of a biplane the air outlets are at the top of the upper wings and at the bottom of the lower wings. Either side may be regulated for balancing and both simultaneously may be operated to produce an additional lift when landing. Fig. 6 shows an application to an airship, in this case air for the tail control is obtained through a longitudinal conduit 11 and lateral control through conduits 15.
