Abstract
Mordant dyes, dyeing with; sulphurized phenols.-In the process of the parent Specifications for the production of non dyeing thio derivatives of phenols by heating phenol or a homologue or substitution product thereof, other than a phenol containing nitrogen, with sulphur in the presence of a neutral salt of an organic carbocylic acid or of a weak inorganic acid, an excess of at least 50 per cent of phenol over the theoretical amount of ,1 mol. of phenol to 2 atoms of sulphur is employed. According to an example, 280 parts of phenol, 100 parts of sulphur and 2 parts of sodium nitrite (all by weight) are melted together until hydrogen sulphide ceases to be evolved. The reaction proceeds rapidly to completion and the excess of phenol is removed by distillation in vacuo.
