Abstract
339,823. I. G. Farbenindustrie Akt.- Ges. Jan. 4, 1929, [Convention date]. Triarylmethane dyes are produced by condensing 1-naphthaldehyde-2-sulphonic acid or a derivative thereof with an alkylated or aralkylated arylamine and oxidizing the resulting leuco compound, possibly after sulphonation. In an example, sodium 1 - naphthaldehyde-2 : 4-disulphonate is condensed with diethylaniline in the presence of sulphuric acid, and the leucocompound oxidized with manganese dioxide. The dyestuff dyes wool a bluish green colour. In a further example, sodium - 1-naphthaldehyde-2 : 4- disulphonate is condensed with ethylbenzylaniline, and the leuco compound oxidized with lead peroxide. 1-Naphthaldehyde-2-sulphonic acid mav be used instead of 1-naphthaldehyde-2 : 4-disulphonate, and the leuco compound thus obtained sulphonated. Other alkylated and aralkylated amines specified are : dimethyl aniline, methylhenzylaniline, dibenzylaniline, 2-methylamino-1- methylbenzene and 2 - ethylamino - 1 - methylbenzene. 1-Naphthaldehyde-2-sulphonic acid and its derivatives may be made from the corresponding 1-#-aminomethylnaphthalenesulphonic acid, c.f. Specification 326,022, by boiling with sodium nitrite and oxidizing the resulting 1-naphthalcoholsulphonic acid with bichromate and sulphuric acid.
