330,229. Imperial Chemical Industries, Ltd., Linch, F. W., Rodd, E. H., and Frew, H. K.. Jan. 31, 1929. Lakes of good fastness to light are prepared by acting on the leuco compound of a triarylmethane dyestuff with a complex inorganic acid in presence of an oxidizing agent, with or without a dispersing agent. Cheap oxidants such as potassium permanganate or sodium dichromate may be used. In examples, lakes are obtained by the action of (1) sodium phosphotungstomolybdate on leuco- Malachite Green in presence of potassium permanganate and excess of hydrochloric acid; (2) sodium phosphotungstomolybdate on leuco- Acronol Brilliant Blue in presence of sodium dichromate and excess hydrochloric acid; (3) sodium phosphomolybdate on leuco-Brilliant Green-Y, in presence of excess of hydrochloric acid, potassium permanganate and a formaldehyds-naphthalene-sulphonic acid condensation product as dispersing-agent; (4) phosphotungstomolybdic acid on leuco-Lissamine Green SF in presence of barium chloride and potassium permanganate; (5) sodium phosphotungstomolybdate on leuco-Acronol Brilliant Blue in presence of excess of hydrochloric acid, potassium permanganate and a formaldehyde-naphthalene-sulphonie acid product; (6) sodium phosphotungstomolybdate on leuco-Acronol Brilliant Blue, in presence of potassium permanganate; (7) sodium phosphomolybdate (prepared in the solution) on Methyl Violet 10B, reduced by zinc dust, in presence of potassium permanganate. The texture and hue may be improved by heating the lake under reflux, and it may be mixed with a substrate before filtration. Specifications 4648/11 and 7137/13 are referred to.
