Abstract

339,645. Johnson, J. Y., (I. G. Farbenindustrie Akt.-Ges.). Sept. 5, 1929. Electromagnets.-Porous masses of metals or metal oxides are made by forming a foam from a mixture of a liquid, a foam producing agent, and finely divided metals, and drying the foam. The dry porous product obtained may be pressed or sintered or it may be alternately oxidized and reduced. Porous oxides produced by the method may be reduced to form porous metals. Metals may be prepared from oxides of iron &c., or metals prepared from carbonyls such as iron, nickel, cobalt, &c. may be used as starting materials, and may be mixed with oxides of the same or other metals. Water, alcohol, &c. may be used as the suspending agent, and the foam producing agent may be sulphonic acids of alkylated' aromatic hydrocarbons or their salts, saponin, soaps, sulphuric esters or their salts, &c. The size of the pores may be modified by blowing air or other gases or vapours into the mixture, and in some cases binding agents and other materials may be added. Cores for electromagnets may be made from porous masses filled with shellac, rubber, or other materials. Specifications 203,718, 301,344, 315,205 and 319,103, [all in Class 70, Indiarubber &c.], are referred to.
