Abstract

338,446. Kellett, W. P. Feb. 4, 1929, [Convention date]. Vehicles with removable bodies.-In vehicles having a platform superstructure which can be raised or lowered either parallel with or at an angle to the truck to facilitate loading and unloading of containers the platform is raised or lowered by threaded shafts which are selectively operated to raise or lower the ends of the platform. As shown the vehicle comprises a chassis 3 having a pair of road wheels and a coupling device 6 for a tractor, a small pair of wheels 5 being provided to support the vehicle when at rest. Mounted on the chassis are pairs of toggle links 10, 11 and 22 having sleeves adapted to embrace right and left handed screw shafts 7, 20. The toggles are provided with rollers 14 adapted to run in channels 13 on a superposed platform or frame 12. Cross frames 15, 24 for rigidity are pivoted to the frame 12 or the spindle of the rollers 14 and to slides on the chassis. The screw shafts 7, 20 have extensions 27, 28 which may be driven concurrently or selectively by cross shafts 32, 33 from a change gear box in train with the engine unit. The frame 12 is provided with grooves or channels 40 for the runners of the containers. Pivoted hooks 39 are provided on the platform 12 adapted to engage under an adjacent rigid truck or platform and so place the chassis springs in tension.
