In a safety razor wherein the shaving edge of the blade is forwardly pressed against fixed stops forming a gauge line, improved means are provided for guiding and pressing the blade. A supporting plate 11 formed with comb-teeth carries stops 13 against which the edge of a blade 20 is pressed by springs 32, engaging abutment notches 25 in the central zone of the blade. The springs 32 are attached at their rear ends only to a cover 15 pivoted at at each end 16 to the rear plate 11. Their front ends are free and they are positioned well to the front of the pivot to afford increased leverage. The cover is pressed into either the clamping or non- clamping position by a double-acting spring 17 extending the full width of the plate and having free ends which engage toe portions on each side of the cover to the rear of the pivot 16. A rectangular projection 40 on the plate engages an elongated central aperture 27 in the blade and serves to limit its rearward movement and guide its forward movement when the cover is moved into position. The aperture may have converging sides, as may also the projection 40 to ensure final positioning of the blade independently of the stopes. The blade may have a backing as shown in Figs. 2 and 3, or, as shown in Fig. 6, it may be double-edged, in which case the notches 225 and aperture 227 are symmetrical with respect to the cutting- edges and the overhanging part of the cover protects the rear edge. The Specification also refers to various dimensional ratios between the notches, central aperture and the blade, such ratios being substantially as shown in the drawings.
