Abstract

Drilling - machines. - A device for drilling the stringing holes in the frames .of tennis or other rackets comprises means for supporting the frame and for moving the frame in front of a drill so that the holes are drilled successively with the required longitudinal spacing and at the correct lateral distances from the sides of the frame. The fixed drill 5 is carried on a spindle 3 driven by a belt 8 from an electric motor 7 and is fed against the resistance of a spring 12 by means of a pedal 10. The drill projects through a slot in an adjustably inclined table 13. The racket frame is secured in a jig consisting of spaced side members 17 one end of the jig consisting of a pair of pivoted sections 18 locked together by catches 20. Centring of the frame in the jig is effected by means of clamps 21 actuated by screws 22. The inside edge of each side member of the jig is notched at 23 and direction lines 23a are marked to indicate the line of the required holes. In operation the jig with its frame is placed on the table 13 so as to encircle the drill, one of the notches 23 is engaged with a spring finger 24 and the jig is pushed forward until the inside face of the frame engages a stop 25. The hole is then drilled, the drill withdrawn, and the frame moved round step by step by hand to position successive notches against the finger 24 for successive drilling operations. After drilling one series of holes in the frame the jig is turned over and the remaining holes drilled. In a modification the means for determining the spacing of the holes consists of a head 26 having a number of pins 29 arranged at different distances apart and adjusted radially by a conical central member. The head is rotatable about a pivot carried by a platform 28 which is arranged at an angle to the drill axis and is secured to the upper surfaces of the table 13. In operation the drill frame with the jig is positioned to encircle the drill and a central mark on the frame is brought into engagement at a point just above the drill with the corresponding pin on the head. A hole is then drilled and the frame then rotated until the next pin or the head is brought into correct relationship with the drill point, these operations being repeated until all the holes are drilled.
