UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE. I,
ARTH R CAMPBELL MoLAREN, or VICTORIA, BRITI-SI-i COLUMBIA, CANADA.
nnvrcn non GOLF ms'rnuorron.
Application filed July 14, 1924. Serial No. 726,042.
To all whom. it may concem: is formed with a hole 23 adapted to register- 'Beit known that T, ARTHUR Cimrrnnim with a hole in the sleeve and to receive there- MoL-uiEN, a' subject of the King of Great through the cord, hereinafter referred to. Britain, and resident of the city of Victoria, It should be noted that the clamp 11 is in the Province of British Columbia, and formed with an offset to provide a hinge on Dominion of Canada, have invented certain the reverse side, so that the carrier arm 17 new and useful Improvements in Devices for may be carried slightly behind and parallel Golf Instruct-ion, of which the following is with club head so as not to interfere with a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in methods of golf instruction and the ob ect line of vision of golfball, as shown in Figure 2.
In operation, and as illustrated in Figure of my invention is to instruct golfers with a 5, a cord or other flexible means 31 is passed view to making them more efficient and acthrough one of the series of orifices in the curate in putting and playing the stymie. arm 21 and suitably anchored at each end by The invention consists essentially in the frpnt-and rear pins 25 and 26, so that said combination with novel means, an embodithat or wire forms a straight line at right ment of which is hereinafter described and angles to the club face. The arm 17 is then illustrated in the accompanying drawings, adjusted so that the cord is over the centre of a method for instructing golfers in putof the face of the club and ball. This arm,
ting and playing the stymie.
\Vith the foregoing and other objects in view, reference is now had to the accompanying/ drawings in which like numerals of reference indicate corresponding parts in each figure and in which- Figure 1 is a side elevation of the apparatus used in combination with a golf club.
Figure 2 is a top plan view.
Figure 3 is a section on the line 3-3 of Figure 1.
Figure 4 is a perspective detail of an alternative form of the adjustable arm illustrated in Figure 1.
Figure 5 is a diagrammatic view of the apparatus in operation.
Figure 6 is a side elevation of a modified form of the apparatus.
Figure 7 is an endview of Figure 6.
In the drawings, and with particular refhowever, can be adjusted to any point to suit the player by means of a thumb screw 24.
In playing the stymie, the cord would necessarily be adjusted away from or near the club shank to allow free rise of the ball.
When the club is played straight backwards along the cord and then forwards, the cord will remain straight, but if the player swings the club back off the true line, the cord will at once indicate the extent of the divergence.
"til
The forward pin 25 can be placed beyond an ordinary hole on a otherwise, as desired.
In Figure 4 is illustrated a modified form of adjustable arm 17, having an eyelet 27 at its free end, the other end being adapted to be pivotally attached through the orifice 28 to the clamp 11.
' Figure 6 also shows a modified form of puttlng green, or
erence to Figures 1 and 2, 10 designates a the invention, consisting of an acute angled golf club of the well known usual construcbracket member 29 on the club head detion, having thereon a clamping member 11 signed to support a vertically extending a'dfastened to the shank of the club at a point justable arm 30, similar to the arm 21, with 12 substantially at the union of the head 13 a series of orifices therein. and shaft 714 of the club. This clamp is The objects aimed at in all constructions formed with suitable wings or flanges 15 and are the same, namely,- the combination with is provided with clamping screws 16. said construction, of an anchored cord, Connected to the clamp at one end is an whereby any divergence from the correct adjustable carrier arm 17 designed to project line of travel of a club in play is clearly inhorizontally and substantially parallel with dicated, thus enabling the player to see his the head of the club and having a suitable error. slot 18 therein. Designed to travel in this As many changes could be made in the slot is a sleeve 19, on which is adjustably and above construction and many apparently pivotally mounted at 20 an arm 21 having widely different embodiments of my invena plurality of spaced orifices 22 therein and tion, within the scope of the claims, consuitably graded. The lower end of this arm strueted without departing from the spirit vhead and shaft on said club, a horizontally extending carrier arm adjustably mounted on the clamping member, a vertically extending adjustable arm on the carrier arm and provided with a plurality of spaced orifices therein adapted to receive therethrough flexible directing means, and means for anchoring said flexible means.
2. Golf instructing means for putting and 'stymies, comprlsing, 1n combination with a golf club, a clamping member adjustably mounted therein, a horizontally extending arm adjustably mounted on the carrier member and a second arm, having orifices therein, adjustably mounted on and at right angles to the aforementioned arm, and guiding line means through said second arm.
3. In means of the character described, the combination with a golf club. of an adjustably mounted arm parallel with and spaced from the golf club head, a second arm, having orifices therein, adjustably mounted on the aforementioned arm, and
flexible directing means adapted to extend through the second arm to indicate the line of travel of the golf club head when operated.
4. The combination with a golf club, of means'for indicating the swing of the golf club and notifying the errors in the travel of said swing, comprising a flexible directing cord or the like anchored at both ends, an arm parallel with the golf club head provided with an adjustable arm at right angles thereto, having a series of orifices therein adapted to individually receive therethrough said flexible directing means, and means on the golf club shank for adjustably supporting said spaced arm.
5. Means of the character described comprising, in combination with a golf club, supporting means carried by the club, an adjustable arm, with orifices therein, on said supporting means and at right angles to the club head, and flexible directing means, anchored at both ends, adapted to extend through each of said orifices, whereby the travel of the club, when swung, is accurately indicated.
y In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand in the presence of two witnesses.
ARTHUR CAMPBELL MCLAREN.
