Abstract

541,880. Drilling and like jigs. BARDSLEY, J. H., and POWELL. H. F. June 11, 1940. No. 10148. [Class 83 (iii)] [Also in Group XXIII] A drilling jig or tool for marking out work particularly for making templates of flat sheet material or for drilling castings comprises a main rectangular frame mounted on a base plate and a transverse bar 2 slidable along the sides B of the frame, the bar carrying a primary slide 3 which in turn carries a secondary slide 4 movable at right angles to the primary slide and carrying one of a series of hardened bushes 19 which serves as a drill guide. The slides are adjusted by screws 5, 6 associated with vernier setting means. Pivoted arms 8 support one or two drilling machines the spindles of which, electrically or otherwise driven, may be moved into coincidence with the bush 19. The sides B of the frame are of X section and may also slide along the base plate. The sides B are also bored with equi-spaced holes spaced for example one inch apart. The transverse bar may thus be moved across the frame in inch steps and located by pins in the holes. A magnetic table or vice may be used to hold the template and may be adjusted to enable the template to be brought flush with the base of the bush 19. A slidable and swingable arm 22 terminates in a centre 24 which may be located at any part of the frame and which carries an adjustable trammel bar 25 for drawing arcs of any radius. A scriber may also be inserted in the bush 19 for drawing vertical or horizontal lines on the template. Angles may be set out by the use of a sine bar or protractor used in conjunction with either edge of the cross bar. To enable long templates to be marked out or drilled the frame may be moved along its guides in steps equal to the length of the frame. The width of the frame may also be increased up to 4-5 feet. For drilling a circle of pitched holes the templates may be attached to a turntable situated centrally under the 'frame.
