Abstract

338,165. Christie, S. P. Aug. 14, 1929. Direct explosion apparatus.-In a liquid piston internal-combustion pump, a semi-rotary disc fuel inlet valve is arranged to be moved and controlled by a device operated by the flow of liquid or exhaust gases, or by pressure variations within the combustion chamber. The valve is described adapted to a pump working on the twostroke cycle. In Figs. 1 and 3, the compressed air and gas is led by pipes 11 and 12 to the valve chamber 13, which contains a ported disc 14 seated on a ported plate 15 on the other side of which seats a spring-loaded non-return valve 19. The valve spindle 16 has a crank 18 attached, carrying a spring 32 to bias the valve in the open position. The crank 18 is connected by the rods 31 to a paddle 30 situated in the play pipe which operates the valve in accordance with the cyclic flow of liquid. Fig. 4 shows a spring 36, connected to one end of the crank 18, which tends to open the valve, whilst a piston 34, operating in the cylinder 35 connected to the stand pipe, is connected to the other end. A cam 39 arranged on the valve spindle engages with a detent 40 operated by the paddle. During the return flow of the liquid the paddle lifts the detent and the valve is opened by the spring 36. During compression the movement of the piston 34 closes the valve and the discharge of liquid during the working stroke moves the paddle in the reverse direction and closes the detent 40. Various modifications for moving and locking the valve are described in which (a) the valve is inter-connected with the exhaust valve and locked by a detent operated by a paddle, (b) an electromagnetic relay is arranged between the paddle and the detent, (c) the valve is operated as in Fig. 4 and the detent operated in a similar way, (d) the detent is operated by an electromagnetic relay from a paddle situated in the exhaust flow. Specification 241,635 is referred to.
