Controlling variable-speed gearing or other apparatus.-A control lever, which is moved laterally to select and is rocked to move the selected gear or other member, is disengageable in any position to which the member has been moved and is then free to select and move another member, enabling a large number of combinations to be made with a small number of gear members. Two members d, e, Fig. 1, fixed to control shafts b, c projecting from the gear box, are selectively engaged by moving a lever # into a recess h or g and are turned by rocking the lever, which may be disengaged in any position of the member d or e. Projections l, m on the members move over fixed tablets i, k which bear letters and numerals indicating the various combinations which may be made. As shown in Fig. 3, three control rods i are formed with rack teeth engaged by toothed segments m, which are selectively connected to a shaft b by a pawl c pivoted in a slot in the shaft. The selection is made by moving a lever e laterally, and the selected rod is moved by rocking the lever together with the shaft b. The pawl c may be disengaged from the selected segment m in any position and is then free to select and move another segment and rod i. Pointers s on the segments project through an indicator scale.
