Abstract
338,013. Ludlow, J. H., and Associated Electrical Industries, Ltd. Nov. 25, 1929. Tilting furnaces. - A lip-tilting crucible furnace is tilted by chains connected to the furnace through mechanism constrained to move away from the tilting axis about a fixed point or points, and so arranged that the point of attachment of the chains has a smaller angular movement about the tilting axis than the furnace. By this means the pulley 11 round which the chains pass to the counterweight can be arranged below the level of the working-platform 21. In the construction shown in Fig. 1 the chains are connected to levers 5, and pass over pulleys 8 attached to the lower rear corners of the furnace. The levers are pivoted to the framework 4 at points 7 to the rear of the tilting axis 2, and each carries a bowed member 6, on which rides a roller 9 at a lower front corner. The tilting is effected by a motor 12 controlled by limit switches 16, 17. In the construction shown diagrammatically in Fig. 4 the chains pass over pulleys 8 at the lower rear corners of the furnace and are connected to the free points E of systems each comprising links 23, 25 pivoted to fixed points F, G, a lever 28 pivoted on the axis of the pulley 8 and connected to the free end of the link 25, and a link 29 pivoted at the point E and connected to the lever 28 at a point 30 between its ends.
