Zig-zag roller type machines; laterally-stretched travelling materials, treating with fluids; passing materials through fluids and fluid applying apparatus.-In a mercerizing machine in which the fabric a, after being stretched laterally, is conveyed around adjacent rollers bl - - b<19> and embraces top and bottom rollers alternately, the fabric is gradually stretched or allowed gradually to shink to obtain a glossy or dull surface either by using rollers of unequal diameter rotating with equal angular velocities or rollers of equal diameter driven by gearing of unequal speeds, the continuous contact of the rollers, which maintains the width of the fabric, being interrupted if shrinkage is desired. The lower rollers b<2>, b<4> - - b<18> are positively driven by gears c<1> - - c<9> having teeth decreasing in number from 75 to 70 to increase the angular velocity of the rollers and so stretch the fabric. The gears may be varied to allow intermediate shrinking. The top roller b<7> may be raised to allow lateral shrinking. The rollers b<2>, b<4>, b<6> dip into a bath i<1> of lye and mercerizing is aided by spraying additional lye from the bath on to the fabric by nozzles m<1>, m<2>. The rollers b<10>, b<12> b<14>, b<16>, b<18> dip into baths i<2> - - - i<3> which may be heated, the baths containing water for lixiviation which is supplied to the bath j<5> and passes through the baths in the opposite direction to the fabric. Nozzles m<3> - - m<7> spray liquid from the baths on to the fabric and rotating vanes k in the baths assist the lixiviation.
