Abstract

337,470. Hartmann, C. W. Aug. 3, 1929. Packeting granular materials in cartons.-In machines for. filling cartons &c. with granular materials, the cartons are received successively from a delivery device common to a number of parallel conveyers to each of which the cartons are delivered and by them carried past a corresponding number of filling devices. Blanks are delivered from a pile 5, Figs. 1 and 2, to a guide 7, from which they are removed by a former 8 on a rotary turret. By the time the former has arrived at position A, the blank has been folded into a tube, at B the flaps at the outer end are gummed by devices 10. The flaps are closed at C and pressed at D. At F the carton drops or is stripped from the former on to a laterally extending support 13, Fig. 3, and is pushed to one side or the other by a plate 12 on a reciprocable rod 14. The cartons are fed to filling devices 3, Fig. 2, by fingers 2 on two parallel conveyers 1 from the positions to which they have been pushed by the plate 12. The conveyers are stationary at the moment at which the empty cartons are aligned beneath the filling devices, and the cartons are raised against the hoppers, this movement being utilized to release the material. After filling, the conveyers feed the cartons to closing, pressing, and delivery apparatus, which may be as described in Specification 337,688, [Class 78 (i), Conveyers &c.]. When the cartons are to be divided into three lines, the member 12 is arranged to move one carton to the right, the next to the left, and to miss the third one, which is carried away through the centre of the machine by a central conveyer. Three filling devices are provided and the various triplicate portions of the apparatus are interconnected so as to operate in synchronism. A number of machines may be arranged side by side, all the corresponding devices being operated by common transverse shafts.
