CIGARETTE-PDUCK-PACKAGING MECHANISM.

To all whom it may concern.
Be it known that I, IIILARION on Esco- BALES, a citizen of the United States, and resident of Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cigarette-Po uch-Packaging Mechanism, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to mechanism for applying pouch, or cup, wrappers to cigarette packages, and more especially to mechanism which is adapted to be used as an attachment to existing machines which automatically supply, bunch and compress groups of cigarettes of suitable number, wrap them in inner, or intermediate wrappers and then insert the packages so produced into separately formed paper cups or pouches, which are placed by hand in position to receive the embryo, or partially wrapped packages, as they are successively ejected from the automatic machine.
The patent to Elberon D. Smith, No. 1,114,053, dated October 20, :1914, shows and describes a wrapping machine of the class referred to; and a leading object of my invention is to provide automatic mechanism for applying cup-wrappers, suitable for attachment to such machine, including machines now in use and made in general accordance with the disclosure of the above.- mentioned patent, although such machines may differ in certain respects, more or less, from the exact structure disclosed in the patent.
The patented machine, as stated, requires cup-wrappers to be separately produced complete, and placed by hand on a spout through which the embryo packages are pushed by an ejector, which'then forces the cup wrapper with its contained cigarettes and inter-mediate wrapper from the spout, to be carried off by a conveyor. The ma chine is therefore limited in output to the rate at which attendant can properly position the cup-wrappers.
My invention aims to increase the outputspeed of such machines and to remove any limitation imposed by the stated hand operation, by automatically applying the cup wrappers ,to the embryo packages; and preferably also, as in the present exemplifying embodiment, avoids ,the cost and other disadvantages incident to the separate production and handling of the cup-wrappers by Serial No. 442,405.

A large number of machines of the patented type are in use, representing a high money value; and one important object vof my invention is to provide mechanism having the desired functions in the form of an attachment, which can easily be applied to the existing machines with few and cheaply made changes, which do not involve any thing approaching redesigning or rebuilding such machines.
Complex problems are involved in the conception and practical embodiment .of mechanism for attaining the desired objects, and especially in embodying such mechanism in the form of an attachment to existing machines of the indicated type. Among these problems are the following:
The patented machine includes means for scribed by various stationary and movable parts of the machine, and it is necessary to arrange the attachment mechanism so-that it will receive the packages at the position mentioned, maintain them in proper form. and perform the necessary operations of placing pouch-wrappers upon them and preferably also of forming the wrappers, without interference with :the existing mechanism, beyond the removal of superfluous parts, such as the spout referred to, and addition of a few parts, such as driving and link connections, and similar minor alterations.
My invention provides a satisfactory solution of these problems.

The present application relates more particularly to different forms of mechanism for transferring, or feeding embryo packages from the existing packaging ma chine to the automatic cup-wrapper applying mechanism, and to modified operative connections for other parts of the mechanism. j
While my invention is desirably embodied in the form of an attachmenu'for the reasonsstated, it is not necessarily so embodied; and from one point of view the invention may be regarded as a part of a complete machine for grouping and initially 'wrappingand then automatically applying pouchr wrappers to cigarette packages or the i like. Evidently the novel structures of the present invention or suitable subordinate parts of it may be embodied in a machine of different design from machines. of the type ofpatent referred to. Certain features of the invention, parts and sub-combinations of parts are also available and valuable aside from the complete structure as hereinafter describedj The characteristics and advantages of my invention are further sufficiently explained in connection with the following detailed description of one exemplifying embodiment of the invention, as shown in the ac companying drawings. After considering this embodiment, it will be understood that many variations may be made in details and in combinations and subcombinations of parts in accordance with the principles of .the invention, and I contemplate the employment of any structures which are within the scope of the claims. 3

Existing machines of the class previously referred to, as sufficiently exemplified for omitting the present purpose by the structure shown in the previously identified patent to Smith, No. 1,114,053, comprise a rotary table 1 carrying a series of pockets 2, in which groups of cigarettes of predetermined num her are placed by suitable mechanism, in association with an initial or intermediate wrapper 3. The table is intermittently rotated and finally a pocket 2 is brought to the position B, in Fig. 1,-opposite a stationary supporting block-3 carried by a stationary table a. At this position the packages P, which will be defined in their present condition as embryo packages, are elevated between plates 5 and 6 beneath a horizontal plate 7, and the three platesi5, 6 and 7 are moved forward by a slide to which they are attached (not here shown), carrying the package in properly assembled and compressed condition over the upper surface of block 3 to a position where the package P is in front of an ejector plunger" 8. As' the package moves forward over the surface 3 the formation of the inner wrapper is complete, except that an end flap of the wrapper projects downward along the vertical face 9 of block 3, as shown in Figs. 17 and 32 of the patent, a clearance being provided along said block face to permit the movement of said projecting flap. The ejector 8 now moves to the right in Fig. 1 to move the embryo package into the open end of a spout, best shown in the patent in Fig.32, and in this movement the downwardly projecting flap of the package is smoothed over against the lower package side by the upper rounded edge of a block (283 in the patent). A separately-formed pouch wrapper (285 in the patent) was previously placed over theouter end of the spout, against a stop, and the ejector forces the embryo package through'the spout and into the cup and then forces the completely pouch-wrapped pack age offof the spout onto a conveyor. The
vertical plates, 5, 6 and 7 at about this time -rocably mounted on a bar 12 secured to a bracket 13 fixed to table 41; and the slide is moved by a link 14 connected to a cam lever 15, the upper end of which extends through a slot 16 in the stationary table; and the cam lever is oscillated at suitable intervals in relation to other operative parts by a cam and driving connections, this ejector mechanism being fully explained inthe patent. I The patented structure also includes a shaft, arranged in an upper horizontal position, which carries a' number of cams and other operative parts of the. machine, and afragment of this shaft, 17 the present application, is shown in dotted lines in Fig. 1.
A number of stationary and movable parts of the mechanism of the existing machine are, therefore, located in the neighborhood of the position in which the embryo package P is shown in Fig. 1. My invention, devised in the present embodiment as an attachment to the described. machine, is organized so that after the spout of the main machine, above referred to, is removed, the attachment may be put in position practically without interference with the existing machine, except the addition of a very few and simple driving parts and connections, the attachment organization being adapted to the restricted space and other conditions existing in the main machine, some of these restrictions and limitations having been referred to previously, and the expedients of attachment andv connection and other slight modifications of the existing machine being further, sufliciently explained hereafter.
The attachment mechanism includes .cupwrapper applying mechanism D and transferring, or conveying mechanism, and preferably these principal instrumenta-lities are secured on a support or table, so that such mechanism, except minor connections, etc., constitutes a unit which may be easily attached to the initial packaging machine. The wrapper-applying mechanism is located in such a position that it will not conflict with stationary or operative parts of the main machine when the attachment is emplaced; and-the conveying mechanism is arranged to transfer the embryo packages from their point of delivery by the main machine, to the cup-wrapper applying mechanism, and to maintain the packages in properlywrapped and compressed condition during transfer.
The cup-wrapper applying mechanism may vary greatly; although in the present specific embodiment the cup-wrapper is presented in the form of a flat sheet or blank, and folded about the package, to form a complete cup-wrapper in subsequent operations of the mechanism.
Similarly, the transfer, or conveying mechanism may be varied greatly, both with regard to the nature and location of the cupwrapper applying mechanism, and with regard to desired characteristics of the conveying mechanism itself; and the particular conveying mechanism here shown is particularly adapted to the particular type and location of cup-wrapper-applying mechanism, and to other present conditions.
In the present embodiment, therefore, the attachment mechanism is embodied as follows:
A supplemental table 20 is bolted to stationary table 4 and a part of this supplemental table runs alongside the edge 9 of block 3, providing clearance for the downwardly extending flap of the embryo assem bly previously referred to, and being provided with a rounded edge 21 over which the lower side of the embryo package passes as it is advanced by ejector 8; and said edge and the upper surface of the table member at this point smooth down the flap against the under side of the package, as in the operation of the patented structure. The spout previously referred to, which is located at this point, is removed and is replaced by a short package channel 22 composed of the table surface adjacent to edge 21 just mentioned, uprights 23 and a top plate 24:, secured by screws 2a to the uprights.
At this point rotary transfer mechanism is'provided for moving the embryo packages to the cup-wrapper applying mechanism D and maintaining the packages in proper form during transfer. This mechanism comprises transfer wheels 25, 26 and 27 carried by shafts 28. 29 and 30, respectively. The right hand ends of shafts 28 and 29 have bearings in an upright frame member 31 secured to the supplemental table, and the shafts have other bearings 32 and 33, respectively, adjacent to their wheels. Shaft 30 is sufliciently supported in a bearing 34C provided in a frame member 35 secured to the supplemental table. Each wheel has pockets 36, usually four in number, defined by side flanges 37 and a bottom flange 38, these pockets being designed to receive a package slid into position endwise and to hold the package and its wrapper in proper form during transfer. lVheel 25 is located so that its uppermost pocket in the position shown in the drawings is in line with discharge channel 22 and at each forward stroke of plunger 8 a package P is pushed through the channel into said pocket. The wheels are then simultaneously rotated one-quarter turn, by mechanism later described, bringing side pockets of wheels and 26 in line as shown in Fig. 4. A plunger 39 is located opposite this pocket position, as best shown in Fig. 1 and the plunger is advanced just after the wheels reach the stated position and ejects a package from the pocket of wheel 25 into the alined pocketof wheel 26. The wheels are again simulta neously rotated one quarter turn, bringing the filled pocket of wheel 26 to uppermost .position and then by another quarter turn of the wheels, said pocket is brought to the left hand position of Fig. 4; where it is in line with the right hand pocket of wheel 27 as viewed from this position. The alined pockets of wheels 26 and 27 are confronted by a plunger a0 which now moves forward and discharges the packaging from wheel 26 into the pocket of wheel 27. 7 While the transfer from wheel 25 to 26 is a one step mechanism later described.
27 is a two. step operation, above de scribed, this only results in a single idle quarter turn of wheels 26 and 27, in starting up the machine, since when the wheel pockets are once supplied with packages there a transfer from each wheel to the next one in the series at each quarter turn, wheel 26 always carrying a package in an idle uppermost position during the transfer of pack- 42, so that all of the transfer wheels rotate "in the same direction at the same speed.
Idler gears 43 are carried by stub shafts having bearing supports in brackets 44 se cured to the supplementaltable.
It is usually unnecessary to confine the outer side of the embryo packages and consequently the outer sides of the wheel poclc ets may usually be left open as shown in the principal figures; but in any case where it is necessary to completely confine the outeix as well as the other sides of the package. the pockets may be providedwith covers 45 suitably secured to the wheel bodies as by screws 46 in Fig. 5, and when these covers are employed, the necessary clearance may,
of course, be provided about the peripheries of the wheels.
It is desirable to interconnect plungers 39, 40 and 41, which may be described as trans-- fer plungers, so that they are operated in suitable relation to each other and to the transfer wheels: and it is also desirableto connect these plungers w1th a part of the patented machine; and simple and novel mechanism for these purposes comprises in the present embodiment the following: Plunger 39 is carriedby rod 46 and this is in turn connected by fitting47 to a rack bar 48 mounted to reciprocate in guides 49 secured to the supplemental table. Bar 48 is provided on one edge with rack teeth 50. Plunger 41 is carried by a rod 51 which is mounted near the plunger to reciprocate in a sleeve 52, provided in frame member 85.
and near the other end is adjustably secured in a bracket 53; and the bracket is in turn connected to a rack bar 54 mounted to reciprocate in guides 55 secured to the supplemental table. Rack bar 54 has on one edge rack teeth 56. Plunger 40 is carried by a rod 57 adjustablysecured to a bracket 58 All the wheel which is in turn connected to rod 51 which carries plunger 41.
A bracket 59 is attached to slide 11 of the I patented machine, which operates plunger 8, andthis bracket is connected to another bracket 60 secured to rack bar48, so that rack bar 48 and its plunger 39 are recipro- By these connections plunger 39 moves the same distance as plunger 8 and is located in relation to the pockets of wheels 25 and 26 so that at the end of its forward stroke it places the rear end of the advancing package flush with the left side of thepocket of wheel26 as viewed in Fig.4. Plunger 41 is moved a greater distance by reason of the multiplying gearing described, this distance being sufficient to carry it from its retracted position just in front of the upper pocket of wheel27, through the pocket and considerably beyond, to carry the packj age into contact with the cup wrapper and then farther on through the wrapper applying mechanism as later described. Plunger40 is located in such a position away from wheel 26 as shown in Fig. 1 that after the plunger reaches the left end of the wheel pocket and-engages the rearward end of the package, its farther motion is just sufficient to carry the rear end of the package into the adjacent pocket of wheel 27 and clear ofthe adjacent edge of wheel 26.
A table or plate 300 is supported above supplemental table 20 by suitable members, such'as'uprights 301 67, and frame mem ber 35 previously mentioned. On this table is located suitable cup wrapper feed, conveying and gumming mechanism designated in general by the character D. Driving means are provided for such mechanism and certain other parts ofthe attachment, as

Near its rear end shaft 71 carries a gear 305 which drives suitable intermittent-motion mechanism carried by shafts 306 and 307, supported by upright 31 in vertical alinement with shaft 71.
This intermittent mechanism may be of any suitable kind to impart to the driven member such as shaft 307 one quarter turn during a small part of one turn of the driving shaft 71, and to retain the driven member in stationary position during the remaining major part of said rotation of the driving shaft. A typical Geneva motion is shown for this purpose. The movement of the Geneva mechanism is communicatedto a gear 315 which engages a gear 316 on. shaft 29, previously identified as the initial driving member of the transfer wheels. In'this way the transfer wheels are moved one quarter turn simultaneously at the proper intervals in relation to other parts of the mechanism.
The cup wrapper feed conveying and gumming mechanism D may, as stated, he of any suitable-type; The mechanism here shown is of the type more fully described in my pending applications, Serial No. 154,447,
filed March 13, 1917, and Serial No. 429,-
6-96, filed. December 10, 1920. The salient features of suchmechanism will now be briefly described, reference being made to said applications for a more-compiete de scription of the mechanism. v
A stack of cup wrapper sheets S is supported on a table 78 and the table is supported above plate 300 by frame meinbers Uprights 80 provide bearings for a shaft 31. which is the drive shaft of the sheet feed and conveying mechanism, and is driven by bevel gears 82 from'shaft 71. Adjacent to shaft 81 is a shaft 83 connected to shaft 81 by gears 84 and 85. Uprights 80 also carry a revoluble shaft 86 and the uprights are providedwith extensions 87 supporting a shaft 88. Uprights 80 also support revoluble shafts 89, 90 and 91. Shaft 81 carries a conveyor roll 93 and co-operating with this are rolls 94 and 95 on shafts86 and 88 respectively.- The three rolls are provided with band grooves in which are located continuous conveyor bands 97, conveniently of the close-coiled Shaft 83 carries a conveyor roll 99, usually of thesame size as roll 93. and co-operating-with this area roll 100 carried by shaft 89 and idler rolls carried by shafts 90 and 91. The rolls last mentioned are provided with grooves near their ends corresponding in position to the grooves of rolls 93,94 and 95, and in these grooves are located conveyor bands 106, substantially parallel to bands 97 and of similar form. The bands-106 and 97 pro-' vide two' active conveyor flights 109, the upper portion of which is curved about roll 99 and a converging entrance is provided at 110 for sheets, delivered from the bottom of stack S. Rolls 93 and 94 are also desirably provided with central grooves in which is located a central band for supporting the sheets adjacent to the gummer.
An oscillating feed frame comprising side members 115 connected by transverserods 117 is pivoted on. the axis of shaft 83 and this frame hasuan arm 120 provided with a cam roller 121 engaging the periphery of cam 122 on shaft 81. The frame also carries a rotatable shaft 124 connected to shaft 83 by means of gears 125, 126, and an idler gear 127. Shaft 124 carries a rubber-faced feed roll 130 adapted to be brought into contact with the lower sheet of t 1e stack S when the feed frame is oscillated by cam 122. The feed roll 130 is continuously driven by the gear connections described from shaft 71, and at each contact with the sheet stack it feeds forward the lowermost sheet through a suitable aperture in the sheet supporting means and the forward edge of this sheet passes into the entrance 110. where it is grasped by the active flight of the conveyor bands and carried downward and discharged from the lower end of the conveyor flight.
Adj acent to the active conveyor flight is gumming mechanism G of any suitable type, including in this embodiment a roll'145, having raised peripheral portions spaced so as to apply to the wrapper-sheet suitable strips a and a of adhesive as indicated in Fig. 6 and these raised portions of the roll are at the same time arranged so as to avoid conflict with the conveyor bands. therefore, is gummed as it passes through the conveyor, and suitable provision is made (consisting in this case of the relative arrangement of conveyor bands and gumming surfaces of roll 145) to prevent application of adhesive to the bands in the absence of a wrapper sheet. I The gummed wrapper sheets discharged from the active conveyor flight pass through an aperture 132 in a short horizontal package channel 321 opposite the uppermost pocket of transfer wheel 27. This package channel is formed of top, bottom and side plates supported by frame member 67. Here the discharged cup wrapper sheet is held by suitable supports in such a position that the advancing package P strikes it centrally as indicated in Fig. 6; As the package is further ac vanced by plunger 41 the upper and lower portions .9 of the wrapper are folded against the upper and lower sides of the package and the adhesive strips a adhere to the end and sides of the package. The particular mechanism for placing and completely forming the cup Wrappers about the package may be varied greatly, and I do not limit myself to any particular mechanism for this purpose except as may be indicated in certain of the claims hereafter: Mechanism in the present structure for operating the side folding plates 158 and plunger 160 differs somewhat from mechanism employed for-that purpose in said companion application. As such mechanism may be easilyincorporated in the present embodiment of my invention, the detector mechanism being applied to the main or initial packaging machine in the same manner as described in my companion application, and similarly, the cup-Wrapper omitting mecha-' nism comprising a clutch and clutch operating mechanism, etc., being applied'to the cup Wrapper sheet feeding mechanism substantially in the same manner as disclosed in said companion application.

Cup Wrapper applying mechanism arranged as an attachment for a cigarette packaging machine in which initially Wrapped cigarette packages are successively delivered, said mechanism comprising means for automatically forming cup Wrappers about successive packages delivered by said machine, and rotary transfer means for mov-. ing the packages from the machine discharge point to said cup Wrapper. applying means. f

The combination with a; machine for forming and initially wrapping and successively delivering cigarette packages at a discharge point, of meansfor automatically presenting Wrappers to successive packages delivered by said machine and shaping said wrappers into cupforin about said packages, and means for transferring the packages from the discharge point of said machine to said cup-wrapper applying means, said means including a plurality of rotary pocketed transfer members, and means for rotating the transfer members simultaneously a distance corresponding to th eintervals betweenv their pockets,

Cup wrapper, applying mechanism arranged as an attachment forv a cigarette packaging machine in. which initially wrapped cigarette packages are successively delivered, said mechanismcomprising a base attachable to a stationary part of said machine, automatic cup-wrapper applying and forming mechanism on said base, rotary transfer means for transferring packages successively fromthe delivery point of said machineto said cup-wrapper applying mechanism, and driving connections from operative parts of saidmachine to said cupwrapper applying mechanism and said transferring means. i

The combination with a cigarette packaging machine having means, for preparinga succession of initially wrapped cigarette packages and means for delivering the packages successively before an ejecting plunger, of means for automatically applying wraps pers to successive packages andshaping the wrappers in cup form about the packages, and means for transferring the packages successively from the ejecting plunger. to the cup wrapper-applying means and maintaining the form and compression of the packages during transfer, said. transferring means including a plurality of rotary pocketed transfer devices, and an operative connection between a part of saidtransferring means and the plunger operating mechanism of said packaging machine.

The combination with a cigarette packaging machine comprising means for form and initially wrapping successive cigarette packages, and including an operating shaft, of means for automatically presenting and forming cup-wrappers upon successive packages delivered from said machine, means forv transferring the packages from the packaging machine to the cup wrapper applying.

In an automatic cup wrap-per, applying mechanism arranged, as an attachment fora packaging machine, a plurality of. rotary pocketed transfer devices for transferingembryo packages fromsaid machine tocup wrapper applying mechanism, means for intermittently rotating said devices simultaneously to position pockets of the different devicesin transfer alinement, and a connection from rotating means to an opera ve part of said packaging machine.
12-111 automatic cup Wrapper applying mechanism arranged as an attachment for pocketed transferdevices for transferring embryo packages from said machine to cup Wrapper applying mechanism, means for in termittently rotating said devices simulta neously to position pocl'rets of the different devices in transfer alinement, and a connection from said rotating means to an operative part of said packaging machine, a plurality of plungcrs for effecting package transfer, gearing connections between the plunger mechanism, and an operative part of sand packaging machine.

The combination with a cigarette packaging machine comprising means for forming and initially Wrapping successive cigarette packages, and including an'opcrating shaft, of means for automatically presenting and forming cup-Wrappers upon successive packages delivered from said'machine, means including rotary pocketed transfer devices and co-operating plungers for transferring the packages from the packaging machine to'the cup Wrapper applying means, and an operative connection from said shaft'to said cupvvrapper applymg means.
18. The' combination With a cigarette packaging machine comprising means 'for forming and initially Wrapping successive cigarette packages and presenting them at a delivery point, and including a rotary table,
a stationary table, an ejecting plunger and an operating shaft, of means for auto matically presenting and forming cup Wrappers upon successive packages delivered by said machine in front of the ejecting plunger, means including a plurality of overlapping pocketed transfer Wheels for transferring the packages from the delivery point of the ejecting plunger to the cup wrapperapplying'means, said transferring means being constructed and arranged to maintain the packages in proper form for application, to

The combination with a cigarette packaging machine comprising means for forming and initially wrapping successive cigarette packages and presenting'them at a delivery point, and including a rotary table, a station arytable, an ejecting plunger Wrapper applying means, said transferring means including rotary pocketed transfer wheels, the pockets of which are constructed and arranged to maintain the packages in proper form for application of the cup wrappers, said cup wrapper applying means and transferring means being secured on a supplemental table arranged to be secured to the stationary table of said packaging machine.

The combination with a cigarette packaging machine comprising means for forming and initiallywrapping successive cigarette packages and presenting them at a delivery point, and including a rotary table, a stationary table, an ejecting plunger and an operating shaft, of means for auto matically forming cup-wrappers upon successive packages delivered by said machine in front of the ejecting plunger, means for transferring the packages from the delivery point of the ejecting plunger to the cup wrapper applying means, said transferring means including rotary pocketed transfer wheels, the pockets of which are constructed and arranged to maintain the packages in proper form for application of the cup wrappers, parts of said transferring mechanism being oper'atively connected with the operating shaft of the packaging machine.

The combination with. a cigarette packaging machine comprising means for forming and initially wrapping successive cigarette packages and presenting them at a delivery point, and including a rotary table, a stationary table, an ejecting plunger and an operating shaft, of means for auto: matically forming cup wrappers upon successive packages delivered by said machine in front of the ejecting plunger, means for transferring the packages from the delivery point of the ejecting plunger to the cup wrapper applying means, said transferring means including rotary pocketed transfer wheels, the pockets of which are constructed and arranged to maintain the packages in proper form for application to the cup wrappers, said cup wrapper applying mechanism including a shaft connected with the operating shaft of said packaging machine, and operative connections between the shaft of said cup wrapper applyingmechanism and parts of said transferring mechanism.

The combination with a cigarette packaging machine comprising means for forming and initially Wrapping successive cigarette packages and presenting them at a delivery point, and including a rotary table, a stationary table, an ejecting plunger and an operating'shaft, of means for automatically forming cup wrappers upon successive packages delivered by said machine in front of the ejecting plunger, means for transferring the packages from the delivery point of the ejectingplunger to the cup wrapper applying means, said transferring means including rotary" pocketed transfer wheels, the pockets of which are constructed and arranged to maintain the packages in proper form for application to the cup wrappers, a part of-said transferring mechanism being operatively connected with the mechanism for operating the ejecting plunger of said packaging machine.

'lhe combination with a cigarette packaging machine comprising means for forming and initially Wrapping successive cigarette packages and presenting them at a delivery point, and including a rotary table, a stationary table, an ejecting plunger, and an operating shaft, of a supplemental table adapted to be secured to the stationary table of said machine, mechanism carried by said supplemental table for automatically forming pouch wrappers upon successive embryo packages, a series of rotary pocketed transfer wheels for transferring embryo packages from the ejecting plunger of said machine, to said pouch wrapper applying mechanism, an operative connection between said transfer wheels and said operating shaft of the packaging machine, said connection including intermittent motion mechanism, transfer plungers co-operating with the pockets of said wheels, and a connection between said plungers and the operating mechanism of the ejecting plunger of the packaging machine.

The combination with a cigarette packaging machine comprisingmeans for orming and initially Wrapping successive cigarette packages and presenting them at a'delivery point, and including a' rotary table, a stationary table, an ejecting plunger, and an operating shaft, of a supplemental table adapted to be secured to the stationary table of said machine, mechanism carried by said supplemental table for automatically forming pouch wrappers upon successive embryo packages, a series of rotary pocketed transfer wheels for transferring embryo packages from the ejecting plunger of said machine to said pouch Wrapper applying mechanism, an operative connection between said transfer wheels and'said operating shaft of the packaging machine, said connection including intermittent motion mechanism, transfer plungers co-operating with the pockets of said wheels, and a connection between said plungers and the operating mechanism of the ejecting plunger of the packaging machine, said connection including multiplying gearing connecting certain of the transfer plungers.
