Abstract
337,140. Goss Printing Press Co., (Assignees of Crafts, C. S.). April 22, 1929, [Convention date]. Feeding and registering webs.-In a webroll supporting mechanism for printing or other machines in which rotatable members engage the ends of the axial orifice in the roll, either of the members may be raised independently to permit a web roll to be fed in endwise and mav then be lowered into position to engage the roll. The members are carried by supports which may be spaced apart to receive rolls of widely different widths and the supports are adjustable together for side register of the web. One member is provided with a manually adjustable brake. The roll 32, Figs. 1 and 2, is mounted on rotatable spindles 30, 30<1> carried by bars 31 slidable vertically on pairs of guides 16, 18 carried by base members 20, 22, and the spindle 30<1> is axially movable to engage and disengage the axial orifice of the roll by a rotatable nut 37 engaging a threaded portion of the spindle. To allow the bars 31 to be raised independently of each other to permit endwise insertion of the rolls, each bar is connected bv cables 48 to drums 47 fixed to cross-shafts 44 provided with hand-wheels 49. Pawls 52 engage ratchet wheels 50 on the shafts 44 to hold the bars in raised position. When a bar is thus raised, the roll is run into position on a truck 41 mounted on rails 40 and the bar is then lowered and the spindle 30<1> operated to grip the roll. The bars 31 may also be raised simultaneously to lift the roll into running position and, for this purpose, the sleeves 34 at the ends of the bars 31 are provided with lugs 55 through which freely pass vertical rotatable shafts 57, 57<1> provided with threaded portions engaging threaded collars 60 which are held against rotation by apertured extensions 61 embracing the guides 16, 18. The shafts 57 are rotated in unison by turning a hand-wheel 67 on a shaft 65 which is provided with worms 70 engaging wormwheels 69 on the shafts 57, the shafts 57<1> being driven from the shafts 57 by chains 74. The base members 20, 22 carrying the guides 16, 18 are slidably mounted on rods 10, 11 supported in end brackets 12, 14 fixed to the floor and are provided with rotatable shafts 78, 82 carrying pinions 76, 84 engaging rack teeth formed on the rods 10, 11. One shaft 78 of each pair 78, 82 is provided with a hand-wheel 80 and the inner ends of the shafts are squared to receive square sockets 91, Fig. 8, on the ends of a telescopically connected rod 94 and tube 93 so that the shafts 78, 82 opposite to one another may be simultaneously actuated to move the corresponding base members 20, 22 along the rods 10, 11 to suit rolls of different widths. A spring is arranged between the inner end of the rod 94 and a cross-pin 96 in the tube and the rod and tube are connected by a pins 98 and slot 97. The rods 10, 11 are adjustable axially and simultaneously for lateral register of the web roll. Brackets 100, 101 are secured to one end of the rods and are provided with guide pins 104 engaging apertures in the brackets 12, 14 and with rotatable screws 106 threaded into the brackets 12, 14. The screws are connected by a chain 111 for simultaneous operation and one of the screws is provided with a gear 113 engaging a gear 115 loose upon the end of the rod 10 and rigidly secured to a hand-wheel 116. To regulate the web tension, the spindle 30 is provided with a brake drum 120 engaged by brake shoes 122 on a pair of levers 124 pivoted at their lower ends and connected at their upper ends by a link 127 carrying a spring and hand-wheel nut 128.
