Abstract

335,765. Robinson, K. A. Oct. 23, 1929. Hollow - ware. - Bands, Fig. 17, are bent round, the ends interlocked, and one edge is flanged over to form the ring, Fig. 16, for holding closures on to bottles. The flat bands are stacked in a magazine 1 the lower band being fed to position above a semicircular die 3 by a reciprocated table 2. The table 2 carries a slidable plate 4 the recess 6 of which is in line with side recesses 5 on the table and receives a band from the magazine and pushes it up to position, the plate 4 being stopped short of this by a nut 12 coming against an abutment 14 thus leaving the band supported at its ends only, ready for the descent of hub die 15. The hub die then descends and forms the band into U-shape. A spring pressed work holder 16 supports the strip. Dies 19 then close in on on the straights of the U to complete the circle, the dies being timed so that the slot b in the band is pushed over the tongue a of the other end which is presented to it. The ring is ejected from the die 15, on the up stroke, bv a pair of spring pushers 21 released by rollers, rising with the die, and assisted by springs 21<a>. The ring on ejection is received on to radially split dies 23 which are expanded by a tapered cone 25 pushed in by a cam plate 27 and roller, Fig. 8. Several dies 23 are arranged round an indexed plate 24 which has a permanent brake 49. A spring supported U-cradle 41 assists the transfer of the ring from hub die 15 to expanding dies 23. As the plate 24 moves round intermittently by Maltese-cross like mechanism the ends of the ring are flattened by a lever actuated press die 28 at one station, one edge is bent over to, form a flange by rollers 36 which are moved up by a spindle 33, the band being supported during bending at its outside. by a circular wall 35 moved up with the spindle 33. The band is then released from the dies 23 by a rod 37 which pushes plug 25 back and so allows dies to contract by springs, the push of rod 37 also carrying a hook 39<a> over the band and on its return stroke scraping it off the dies 23 to drop down a shoot 40. A metal or cardboard disc may be fed to and held for insertion in the band by vacuum &c. before bending over the edge.
