Abstract
339,468. Armstrong, J. J. V., (Phoenix-Hermetic Co.). Nov. 23, 1929. Cupping.-Circular waste blanks 5 from a previous operation are placed in a scoop mouthed tube 10 from which they are fed to a punch 4 which punches them to size and cups them in a die 3 to form bottle caps. A blank 5 from the bottom of the pile in the tube 10 is engaged and sucked down past spring dogs 41 by a suction cup 17 on the end of a reciprocated plunger 16. Dogs 41 are threaded internally with gaps in between and are arranged in groups of 3 so that the bottom disc is supported at three points, and thereby causing the disc to bend when the suction cup first acts and so break any suction vacuum between the bottom disc and the one above it. The dogs 41 arc held in position by garter springs 47, 48 which allow a disc to be sucked down through them. Suction is applied to the cup when the port 38 of the channel 37 in the plunger registers with a port leading to a vacuum pump 33 synchronously cam operated. When the disc has been drawn down to position on the feed bed the vacuum in the cup 17 is broken by the port 39 registering with port 40 to atmosphere. The feed slide 58 (two side bars with cross connection 52) is now reciprocated in timed relation towards the die 3 by cam lever 54 so that spring-pressed fingers 62 push the previous discs on and under a spring- pressed plate 61 towards the die 63 and after the slide 58 moves back the discs are held on the bed by the spring-pressed plate 66 while the fingers 62 ride up over the discs and click behind them into grooves 61 ready for the next push forward. The disc which is located over the die 3 is held thereon by a spring-pressed dog 71, Fig. 3, which after punching retains the waste ring of metal until stripped therefrom by the end feed fingers. 62.
