292,200. Wallis, H., C., and Adams, R. C. Feb. 18, 1927. Hollow-ware. - Metallic fastening rings for cap closures for bottles &c. of the kind in which the two ends are fastened together by a tongue and slot connection as described in Specification 286,050, [Class 125 (iii), Stoppers &c.], are automatically made by feeding a previously tongued and shaped strip round a mandrel, the diameter of which is then increased to cause the tongues and slots to interlock. Means are also provided for flanging inwardly one edge of the ring as shown in Fig. 10. An intermittently rotated core a has a projection a<1> forming a mandrel co-operating with a circular wall b having'interruptions in which are located driven rollers c, d carried by spring-pressed rollers c<1>, d<1>, pivoted at 21. The mandrel is slotted to receive a spring- retracted block a<2>, which has a bevelled edge' a<4> adjacent a central hole a' in the core. This edge is engaged by a conical projection e<1> on reciprocating die e to move the block outwards. The die has a conical surface e<4> to engage the edges c<2>, d<2> of the levers c', d<1> so as to retract the rollers from the mandrel and a surface, e<5> to engage surfaces c<3>, d3 to maintain them in this position. It has further a shoulder e<3> and an internal conical surface e<3> to co-operate with the mandrel to flange over the edge of the formed ring. A driven feed roller f<2> co-operating with a roller f<1> is mounted in a bracket f<3> pivoted at 32 and oscillated so as to bring either of the stops f<4>, f<5> into contact with the shoot f down which the strip s is fed with the forward tongue inwards and the rear tongue outwards. The forward end of the strip is placed in contact with the stop f<4> and, when the bracket is oscillated, then engages the stop f<5>, the roller f<2> being brought out of action. The bracket is then again oscillated and the rollers f<2>, f<1> feed the strip forward until it contacts with the surfaces e<5> of the die which is then in its forward position. During withdrawal of the die the strip is further fed to the point. x, the stop f<4> being bifurcated and the roller f<2> grooved to allow passage of the rear tongue. At this stage the rollers c, d contact with the mandrel and the core starts rotating to draw the strip round the mandrel. Eventually the roller c is pressed into the gap in the mandrel to interlock the tongues and slots. On further movement of the mandrel the ring is completed and the tongues flattened against the wall b by outward movement of the block by the die, which thereupon flanges the edge. The completed rings are ejected by pins h mounted on a collar on the shaft 3 and pushed forward by a collar connected to a bifurcated lever engaged by a cam on a shaft 36. The pins are retracted by springs to give a quick withdrawal to prevent fouling of the ring by the die. The strip is retained during bending by a lip g<1> on a spring-pressed lever 28, which is pivoted at 21 and raised by the die prior to ejection. The core is mounted on the shaft 3, which is driven through a bevel wheel 5 by a mutilated wheel 6 so that it makes a complete rotation and then remains stationary for an equal or greater period. The wheel 5 is positively held stationary by a spring pawl 45, which is subsequently raised out of action by a cam on the shaft 2. The rollers c, d are mounted on shalts 16 in rocking bearings 17 and are driven by gearing 19, 20 from the shaft 3. The die is carried by a cross-member 7 operated by eccentrics 13. The roller f<2> is geared to a shaft 39 coaxial with the pivot, and having a gear at its other end in mesh with a gear 41 on a shaft connected by bevel gear 43,44 with a, shaft 36 which is driven by change gear from the shaft 2. The bracket f<3> is oscillated by a lever 33 pivoted at 34 and engaging a cam 35 on the shaft 36. According to the Provisional Specification the die may be magnetized to extract the finished ring, the mandrel may be provided with a freely rotatable roll co-operating with the feed roller, the block may be pivoted in the mandrel, and spring controlled bevelled plungers may be provided in the circular wall to ensure that the strip is pressed against the block.
