Aug. 26, 1929, Filters having sheet filtering-materials; filters fitted in pipes.-In a filter, for use in pipe lines conveying petrol and the like, of the type comprising a body with inlet and outlet connections, a dirt trap bowl to which the liquid is admitted and a filter element enclosed in the bowl with its interior connected to the outlet passage, the body is divided transversely into two relatively movable parts, operation of which ca.uses blanking-off of passages constituting the inlet to the filter. In the form shown the lower portion 2 of the body has passages 26, 27 which in the normal position register respectively with an inlet passage 22 and an outlet passage 23 in a bracket. 17 which constitutes the upper portion of the body. A filter element 8 of wire gauzes stiffened by a spring 11, is fixed by means of a nut 10 in a, central recess of the part 2. The bowl 7, which may be of glass, is held in position by means of stirrup 12 hinged to the part 2. The upper face of the part 2 is held against a lower horizontal face of the bracket 17 by means of a central stud 19, a cork washer being preferably provided between the faces. Rotation of the part 2, limited by stops on the bracket against which the stirrup engages, shuts off the flow of the liquid, so that the bowl may be removed for the cleansing &c. of the filter element.
