Abstract
293,534. Paterson, W. May 25, 1927. Filters with loose filtering-materials. - In order that the wash-water collecting above a filter bed of sand or the like, cleansed by agitation with reverse flow of water or air under pressure, can be readily run to waste, while wastage of the filtering- medium during agitation is prevented, the whole or a part of either or both of the walls of the waste trough is made movable or collapsable. As shown, a flap c forms, during agitation of the sand bed a, an upward continuation of the wall b of the waste trough d. When agitation ceases, the flap is turned by links g and lever h about an axis c<1>, and the wash water flows into the trough. The flap may be operated from the spindle of the waste valve or from a float in the trough d, or may be loaded so that it can be turned about an axis bv the differences of pressure on its two sides due to water above the bed and in the trough d. Instead of using flaps as part of the wall of the trough, sluices may be provided in the wall.
