Microphones; gramophone pick-ups; magneto - microphonic relays.-The pressure on the granular material of a microphone is adjusted by an adjustable pressure member, bearing on the vibrating member, and supported by cushioning means from a rigid support. In the gramophone pickup, Figs. 1, 2, the fixed electrode is a plate 7 of carbon, metal, &c., located in a recessed plate 3, holding the granular carbon, &c., 4, the vibrating carbon or metal electrode 5 being clamped to the plate 3 by screws 6 at one end, and driven by a stylus-arm 10 to which an adjustable force can be applied by a screw 14 through the packing- piece 15 for varying the compression of the granules. Extensions 12 of the stylus-bar are clamped by means of a plate 11 to the casing of the instrument, rubber cushioning 13 being arranged round the said extensions. In a modified pick-up (Figs. 4 and 5, not shown) adapted to work in a horizontal position, the vibrating electrode is clamped at both ends, and is preferably thinned near the attachment surfaces, the stylus-bar having two limbs at right-angles. In a magneto-microphonic relay, the armature 22, Fig. 3, of the magnet 21 drives the vibrating electrode 5 through a rod 23, and the adjustable pressure is applied to the armature by a screw 25, means being also provided for the adjustment of the magnet 21 relative to the armature. According to the first Provisional Specification an output transformer may be incorporated in the device.
