Feedwater, controlling.-A pivoted chamber 6 containing mercury and divided into compartments 8, 7 connected respectively by tubes 9, 13 with the steam and water spaces of a boiler drum 2 so controls the feed valve 5 as to increase or decrease the water level in the drum with an increase or decrease in the boiler rating as measured by the velocity of the water circulation between the steam drum 2 and the water drum 3. An increase in the flow through the tubes 14, 15 connecting the drums 2, 3 causes a decrease in pressure in one of the compartments 7 in the chamber 6, and by tilting the chamber opens the feed-valve and raises the boiler water level, thus increasing the pressure in the compartment 7 and restoring the chamber to its horizontal position. The tube 9 connecting the compartment 8 with the boiler steam space, is filled with condensation water from a chamber 10 connected with the boiler drum through a column 11. The oscillations of the mercury chamber rock a lever 21 operating a valve 24 controlling the escape of pressure fluid from beneath a piston 26, which is connected to the lever system 36 operating the feed valve. A weight 23 on the lever 21 may be slid along the lever to vary the relationship between the water level and the rating.
