Assembling matrices. - In machines in which multicharacter matrices can be assembled at different levels. and in which the first elevator can be arrested by a movable stop in a slightly raised position, automatic means is provided for bringing matrices assembled at the higher level down to the lower level when the elevator stop is in action, in order to avoid an improper presentation of the matrix line to the mould. The matrices are sustained at the higher level in the assembler C, Fig. 1, by a retractable rail C', and in the first elevator F, Fig. 5, by a retractable rail F<1>. The pivoted stop or filler-piece J, Fig. 1, by which the elevator is arrested at the higher level, is connected by a crank pin and a, slot to a sliding rod K, which is connected to a lever L bearing a cam-piece L<3>. When the stop J is in operative position, the cam-piece L<3> is projected. so as to be adapted to engage a notch in the end of the assembling-rail C<1>. and to withdraw the rail as the assembler ascends. The cam-piece may be mounted directly on the rod K. In a modification, the matrices are brought to the lower level by withdrawal of the rail F<1> of the first elevator durng the descent of the elevator towards the mould. The levers F<7>, Fig. 5, by which the rail F' is operated, have connected to them an arm F<6>, which can be engaged by a cam-piece M<1>, so as to withdraw the rail.
