Abstract

334,862. Robson, S., and Lewis, P. S. June 8, 1929. Catalysts, preparation and treatment of; sulphur trioxide, catalytic production of.-A catalyst for the oxidation of sulphur dioxide is made by mixing a vanadium compound with an indifferent carrier and treating it in the cold with an acid gas such as sulphur dioxide, in the presence of moisture, until the product gives an acid reaction to litmus, and gas is no longer absorbed. The temperature must be sufficiently low to avoid removal of the water, which may be present in the gas. Any vanadium compound mav be used which will react with sulphur dioxide to yield vanadyl sulphate which dissolves in the water present and thus becomes distributed throughout the mass. The mixture is pelleted before or after the reduction, with a suitable binding agent such as sodium or potassium silicate and gums, e.g. gum tragacanth or gum arabic. The carrier may be pumice, kieselguhr, diatomaceous earth &c., or dried precipitated silicic acid. Catalyst promoters such as salts of tin, bismuth or manganese may be added. The catalyst. is immune to poisons and gives at 94 to 95 per cent conversion of sulphur dioxide to trioxide at a temperature of 400‹ C. Specification 23541/13 is referred to.
