Abstract

334,819. Ridder, O. Jan. 5, 1929, [Convention date]. Movable-abutment type; valves, distributing and cut-off; packing drums, vanes, abutments, and the like; cooling and heating parts; working- fluid supply.-In a, rotary engine of the outwardlysliding abutment type, pistons 36 are supported between two rings 5 and 55 which rotate in an annular chamber bounded by inner and outer diameters of two casing parts, 8 and 12. Cams 32, 33 on the working-shaft 1 lift the spring- loaded abutments 24 by bearing on rollers 26 which are fixed to supporting arms 50. A hub 3, keyed to the shaft 1, carries the two rings 5 and 55 and the connecting pistons 36. The outer casing 12 is supported on a frame 35 and has a bearing 11 for the hub 3. Steam is admitted through pipes 18 to valve chests and the supply to the annular chamber is controlled by axiallysliding piston-valves which have end rollers 28 running on the cams 32 and co-operating with ramps 34 which move the piston-valves to right or left to admit or cut-off steam. Steam is exhausted through ports 13 and pipes 14. Hollow jackets 38 and 39 can be used for heating, or if the engine is used as an internal-combustion engine, they can be used for cooling. When used as an internal-combustion engine cover plates 16 are removed to admit scavenging air to the working chamber. A firing plug can be inserted in a pocket 42. Packing pieces are fitted to the piston, rotating rings and sliding abutments. Moving parts are constructed hollow to secure lightness.
