Hopper-and-plunger machines.-Apparatus for dividing plastic material, of the kind in which the material is extruded by a piston through an opening periodically closed by a slide, is provided with a hollow piston having a relatively-movable core the stroke of which is adjusted by a manually operated stop to regulate the quantity of material delivered. Fig. 1 shows the extrusion machine in which the material supplied by rollers a is delivered by the piston through the nozzle c' when the slide d is withdrawn by the cam mechanism f. The core n<2>, which can move relatively to the outer part m of the piston in the slotted portion m<1> of the piston rod, is driven normally by the arm o so that the piston functions as an entity and delivers a full charge through the nozzle. By setting the cam r, the arm can be withdrawn from the driving position at any predetermined point, thus allowing the core n<2> to recede under the pressure of the material for the whole or part of the remainder of the stroke. Suitable stops are provided to limit the movement and to restore the core on the return stroke, and by regulation of the stops and cam r the quantity delivered can be varied within fine limits.
