334,268. Imperial Chemical Industries, Ltd., and Weil, J. A. June 1, 1929. Right to Patent relinquished. Calalytic agents, preparation of; sulphur trioxide, catalytic production of.-Catalysts, especially suitable for the oxidation of sulphur dioxide to sulphur trioxide, are obtained by the physical admixture of a vanadium compound with a siliceous diluent and a silicious hydrogel, such as silica gel, or by admixture with a silicious materal of which part is in the form of a wet hydrogel. The silicious material may consist of finely ground silica, silicious brick, sand or kieselguhr mixed with wet silica gel, and suitable vanadium compounds include alkali vanadates, alkali vanadites, vanadyl salts or double salts, such as venadyl sulphate or ammonium vanadyl oxalate. The mixture is formed into pellets or masses, dried, and preferably treated with burner gas at 450‹-500‹ C.
