Abstract
334,149. Rother, F. Dec. 24, 1929, R÷ntgen-ray tubes. -The cathode consists of a single rectilinear stretched wire 2 within, and along the axis of, the hollow anticathode 1, the electrostatic stress on the cathode being symmetrical. The conical anticathode is mounted on, and co-axial to, a tubular heat-conducting body 3 of copper with a space 6 above and wider than the anticathode. The leads 5, 8 to the cathode are respectively above and below the anticathode, the lead 5 passing through an aperture 7 into the space 6. The body 3 and the anticathode 1 are slotted at one side to allow introduction of the cathode. Heat expansion of the body 3 does not alter the central position of the cathode. The cathode 2 may be cold or heated, with a potential of 40,000 to 75,000 volts applied between the cathode and anticathode. The cathode may be of a light metal such as beryllium or its alloys and the anticathode may consist of chemically pure, radioactive, metal, such as uranium, thorium or their alloys, freed from gas. The cathode is thus exposed all round to the radioactive influence and the effective surface of the anticathode is at least ten times that of the cathode.
