Shoots.-Coal &c. from a bin 10 passes a gate 15 and shoot or washing apron 20 and enters the open side 29 of a vertically adjustable shoot 25 extending to the bottom of a wagon 37, or of the hold of a vessel &c., the shoot 25 being raised as loading proceeds. The material is retained in the shoot 25 by inclined plates 45, each extending lower than the top of the plate beneath, and a vertical passage 46 is left adjacent to the side 28 of the shoot. The mouth of the shoot is provided with a sliding gate 39 which may be initially closed so that the shoot is filled and and loading proceeds without breakage of the coal. In filling the shoot 25 before opening the gate 39, the coal may at first be introduced near the bottom 26, and the shoot lowered as it is filled. A guard plate 50, 51 is fitted below the feeding shoot 20 to retain any material falling during the vertical movement of the shoot 25. The shoot 20 is provided with verticaj walls 22, and the shoot 25 slides on flanges 30 on these walls as' shown in Fig. 2. For loading a vessel, a rotatable trimmer shoot is fitted on the bottom of the shoot 25, the delivery from the latter to the trimmer shoot being controlled by a horizontal plate valve.
