Abstract

333,226. Triggs, W. W., (Champion Coated Paper Co.). May 3, 1920. Adhesives.-Paper is coated by applying to one or both of its surfaces uncooked starch made into a slurry with water, with or without a pigment, and developing the adhesive properties of the starch on the paper by heat. Corn starch, potato starch, rice starch, or " treated " starch (i.e. starch chemically treated, for example with acids) may be used. Suitable pigments are china clay and satin white. Dispersing agents such as gum arabic or '' treated " starch, waxes, colouring agents such as aniline dyes or mineral colours, and softening agents such as glycerine or castor oil may be added. Heating of the coated paper is carried out under substantially non-drying conditions, preferably by contacting with steam for a few seconds. An example of a composition suitable for heavy coating comprises 80 parts of china clay, 20 parts of raw corn starch, ¢ part of gum arabic and 120 parts of water.
