Abstract

Heating by electricity. - In an immersion heater comprising a core 4 bored to receive resistances 2 and housed in a metal container 1, the resistances are connected at one end of the core by a lump of solder 20. With excessive heat the solder fuses and collects in the porcelain cup 19. If the heater is removed and heated externally in an inverted position the solder again fuses and collects in the porcelain cup 21 to reconnects the ends of the resistance. The core is of steatite and is machined to fit the casing 1. The bores receiving the resistances are filled with magnesium oxide. A central bore 6 is sufficiently large to enable the interior of the element to be viewed from the outside and thus permit any glow due to overheating to be observed.
