Abstract
539,178. Electric liquid heaters. BRITISH THOMSON-HOUSTON CO., Ltd. Aug. 28, 1940, No. 13554. Convention date, Aug. 28, 1939. [Class 39 (iii)] In an electric liquid heater of the flow type, a heating element 19 of the sheathed wire type described in Specification 144,767, [Class 39 (iii)], is wound in double helical form over a hollow core 16 of copper or brass having a diameter substantially the same as the inner diameter of the coil. The heater is placed in a casing 10 having a diameter substantially the same as the outer diameter of the coil. A cap 13 having a liquid inlet 14, and an outlet fitting 12, are brazed to the casing 10. The liquid in passing through the apparatus follows helical paths in contact with the element 19 whereby heat transfer is facilitated. The element is connected to terminals 23, 24 passing through cavities 27 28 filled with a phenolic condensation product cured after filling as described in Specification 345,563, and closed by porcelain bushes 34. Connectors 38 are secured to the terminals by screws 40, and s cover 41 encloses the terminals. Obstruction of the outlet 12 by sagging of the element 19 is counteracted by the provision of holes 43.
