Fuselages.-The fuselage of an aircraft or a boat is of substantially triangular cross-section and is formed from metal plates previously cut to a tapering outline and given a curvature in all directions so as to be under initial stress. The plates may be of uniform thickness or tapered from the centre towards the ends. Fig. 4 shows a fuselage of triangular section with curved sides formed from three such plates overlapped at the edges and riveted or welded together. Another form is described in which a gusset plate is inserted towards the front end. In larger bodies the front and rear parts may be separately formed and butted together to leave a smooth outer surface, and the sides may each be formed from more than one piece with longitudinal joints.
