Spindle apparatus; stop-motions. - In a doubling and twisting apparatus of the type in which a bobbin for the threads to be doubled is mounted on a carrier, about which a rotor turns and imparts a double twist, a stop-motion is operated by the relative motion of electric contacts either when the tension in the thread increases beyond a predetermined limiting value, or when the carrier tends to rotate. In Fig. 1, the bobbin 1 is mounted on the carrier 2 which is pivoted by means of ball-bearings on the journals 3 and 4, the latter being supported in bearings 3<1> and 4<1>. The rotor consists of two flanges 6 and 7 having a cylinder 5 between them. Apertures 8 are provided to allow access to the bobbin. The thread a is drawn round the rollers 41, 42 and 43, round the pulley 9<1>, through the tube 9 to the pulley 9<11> and thence to a drawing apparatus. The roller 43 is mounted so that it can rise or fall vertically with varying tensions in the thread. For excessive tension, the roller is raised against the pull of a small adjustable spring and carries with it the insulated metal arm 46, which thus makes contact with the two halves of the split pulley. If the carrier 2 rotates, the freely hanging member 39 which is in the form of an inverted V, and is insulated from the frame of the machine, comes into contact with the split pulley. The latter consists of two insulated metal discs mounted on the journal 3 between'the members 39 and 46, and connected to slip rings adjacent to the driving pulley 10. Brushes bear on these rings and are connected in series with the supply mains and a switch controlling the driving motor. Thus when the two halves of the split pulley are bridged, either through excessive thread tension or rotation of the carrier, the circuit to the slip rings is completed and the apparatus stopped.
