Disc and like mills; reducing wood.-A method of producing pulp from wood &c. consists in disintegrating water-impregnated material, and then in the presence of water subjecting it to a rolling and crushing or squeezing action of two oppositely and concentrically positioned plates or discs between which relative rotary movement at high speed is produced. The material is fed from a hopper 1 through a feeding device 2 to a disintegrating machine 3 supplied with water from a pipe 6, the material being discharged into a conveyer 7 and fed therefrom into a secondary apparatus 8. The disintegrating machine 3 may consist of rollers which reduce the material and impregnate it with water. Heat in the form of steam or hot water may be furnished to the disintegrator. The disintegrator 3 comprises opposed discs of which one or both rotate, the disintegrating surfaces 3<1>, Figs. 3 and 4, being formed with a series of concentric corrugations which interengage and which are provided with radially extending ribs 15. The material is fed in the centre of the discs and the space between opposed corrugations is such that the tortuous nature of each channel increases and the crosssectional dimension decreases from the central throat to the outer discharge end. The secondary apparatus comprises oppositely rotating discs 9, 10 provided with radial disintegrating ribs 19, Fig. 10, inclined from base to point in the general direction of rotation. If the process of pulping is to be completed in the secondary apparatus further teeth 20, Fig. 6, of cpposite inclination to the teeth 19, are provided in rows extending to the periphery of the disc. These teeth roll, press and rub the material without cutting in the presence of water from a pipe 6 or hot water or steam from a pipe 7,Fig. 2, and the material is discharged through the outlet 18. Water for cleaning the discs 9, 10, Fig. 2, may be supplied by a pipe 22. The number of rows of these different forms of teeth may be varied.
