Abstract
331,324. Davis, N. R., and Associated Electrical industries, Ltd. May 8, 1929. Induction furnaces.-An earthed hollow screen or grid through which a cooling fluid is circulated is arranged between the charge and the furnace coil and may be embedded in the furnace lining. The screen is constructed so as not to present a continuous circuit embracing the charge and perpendicular to the magnetic field. Fig. 2 shows a helical screen formed of a flattened tube the central convolution 5 extending over the middle third of its length. Near the ends where the flux is appreciably radial the axial dimension of the coil should not exceed a certain value for which a formula is given. Rubber hose connections 6 are fitted to the ends of the coil. The mid point of the screen is earthed. Fig. 3 shows a screen formed of flattened or oval tubes 10 interconnected at one end by a discontinuous tube 8. The dimension of the major axis of the cross-section of the tube is calculated by the formula previously referred to. The furnace coil may be made of laminated or stranded cable and cooled by natural air circulation or forced draught. Specification 323,561 is referred to.
