Abstract

331,201. Brown, G. M. and Wyse, H. T. Feb. 19, 1929. Divided on 332,190, [Class 140, Waterproof &c. fabrics]. Coating with liquid &c. materials.-In applying a surface coating to an article the coating material, which may comprise varnishes, pigments, glazes, enamels, lacquers, &c., is deposited ' on a flotation medium as a film of substantially greater area than the surface to be coated, one end of the article is then brought into contact with the film leaving marginal portions thereof extending some way beyond the article, and relative movement between the article and the flotation medium is effected at right angles to the plane of the film so as to cause substantially complete immersion of the article and to draw the film away from the surface of and through the medium into enveloping contact with the whole surface of the article. The article may be lowered into the flotation medium or may be held stationary above the medium and the level of the latter raised by upward movement of the trough containing it or by forcing more liquid into the trough. The coating materials used include a pigment in a vehicle such as boiled linseed oil to which a volatile solvent or other thinning agent may be added, compositions, e.g. a cellulosic solution, giving a glazed or enamelled surface, cellulose lacquers diluted with thinners, printers' ink diluted with petrol, Reeves' waterproof poster colours diluted with petrol, and ox-gall and water as used in the known hand process for making marbled papers. Monochrome or variegated colour films may be used and irregular patterns may be produced by stirring the film, by depositing the colour by spraying, by spraying ox-gall, water or other liquids on the colour, or by giving an irregular movement to the article being coated. The surface of the article to be coated may be treated with a resist, such as a sugar solution, which will prevent deposition of the film, or with an imperfect resist which will modify the amount of film applied, by means of which ornamental designs may readily be obtained. In the example given, the flotation medium 2, e.g. water or an aqueous solution of Caragheen moss, is filled into a stepped trough 1 and a coating film 3 deposited thereon. A vase 4 of porcelain &c. is then gradually lowered into the trough, one edge of the base being first brought into contact with the film and the contact gradually extended to prevent formation of an air bell. Where a large dipping trough is used it may be subdivided into pools by a frame or frames floating on the liquid, and films of different colours may be formed in the separate pools. With some colours and flotation media as many as four articles may be coated from a single film. Specifications 4219/82, 7145/84, 14465/99, 245,209; and 262,601, [Class 120 (iii), Yarns &c.], are referred to.
