Abstract

329,996. Mantz, A. F. Feb. 25, 1929. Sashes balanced by spring rollers.-A spring sash balance comprises a pair of independently operating cable drums mounted for operation in a plane parallel to the side opening of the window, the inner ends of the springs being connected to the hubs of the drums and the outer ends to each other. The spring drums are mounted on arbors 14 disposed across a casing 10, 12 and the pulley drums are formed of two contacting plates 15, 17 forming a peripheral groove capable of receiving a single layer of ropes 16. A friction device 20, 21 is disposed between the pulleys and casing to act as a brake and prevent creep of the sashes when in adjusted position, and in a modification this friction device is capable of adjustment. A duplex volute spring 22 is arranged with its inner ends attached to the hubs and the outer ends to each other, so that it operates on the drum hubs in opposite directions. The ends 18 of the drum cables are attached to the respective sashes and the sashes are thus supported in all positions, the spring drums forming yielding equalizers between the cable connections to the two sashes.
